iBRoad guidance to energy auditors as driver for deep        renovation

Building renovation is often considered a burden for home-owners who do not know what to do and where to find reliable information about their home energy improvement plan. An important role in this lies with energy auditors who can support building owners in their decision making and actual renovation works. The iBRoad project has developed the tools necessary to drive a step-by-step deep renovation process. This includes material to train energy auditors and guide them through the process of issuing the iBRoad building renovation passport tools (iBRoad Roadmap and Logbook) in a way which inspires trust from building owners and supports their actual renovation planning. Training of energy auditors by iBRoad has been completed in the three pilot countries Bulgaria, Poland and Portugal. The iBRoad Roadmap and Logbook are currently being tested on real buildings in these countries. Feedback from both auditors and home-owners who tested the tools is being collected and will serve as input to the further improvement of the iBRoad tools. The iBRoad training toolkit includes the training material used as well as the iBRoad Handbook for Energy Auditors.

The Report "Country-specific adoption of elements within the national version of iBRoad" supports the implementation of iBRoad in specific countries. It analyses the differing framework conditions under which the tools will be tested and applied, highlighting the country-specific adaptation of elements within the tools as well as strategies to adopt the concept, so as to ensure that the iBRoad individual Building Renovation Roadmap and Logbook have the greatest possible impact in the specific markets.

18 months and more

The iBRoad project has a foreseen duration of 36 months and is already through more than its half-life. The results for the first 18 months, as recently reported, are particularly noteworthy:

>Review of the national situation regarding the implementation of Energy Performance Certificates, energy audits, renovation activities and deep renovation strategies in participating countries (Bulgaria, Belgium Flanders, Germany, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Sweden)

>An in-depth analysis of four frontrunner examples of Building Renovation Passport related initiatives from Belgium, France, Germany, and Denmark.

>A survey analysis of the potential user needs and markets for Individual Building Renovation Roadmaps in Bulgaria, Poland, and Portugal.

>Identification and structuring of the necessary indicators and suggested elements, content and layout of the iBRoad tools.

>Development of the architecture of the iBRoad tools into a concrete model, including the related techno-economic methodologies and numerical parameters.

>Adaptation of the generic data structure and methodology, with fixed and country-specific parameters, to the national requirements of the pilot countries.

>Training of auditors in the pilot countries in preparation of field testing.

>Stakeholder meetings in 8 countries to collect feedback on the iBRoad concept.

EU recommendations on building renovation

Guidelines recently released by the European Commission support correct implementation in national and regional regulatory frameworks of the provisions of the EPBD in relation to building renovation. The guidelines’ focus includes Article 2a of the EPBD for the long-term renovation strategies to support the renovation of national building stocks and mention the Building Renovation Passport, and iBRoad in specific, as an example of a measure for Member States to support targeted cost-effective renovation and staged deep renovation.

Stakeholder meeting on the feasibility of the building renovation passport

Following Article 19a of the EPBD, a technical study is currently being conducted on behalf of the European Commission to examine the feasibility of the building renovation passport concept. iBRoad is a project funded by the Horizon 2020 European programme, aimed at exploring, designing, developing and demonstrating the concept of individual Building Renovation Roadmaps. With the innovative approach proposed, the project aims to become a real driver for deep renovation. Representing an evolution of the Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and energy audit systems, building renovation roadmaps will serve as a tool outlining a customised renovation plan with a long-term horizon for deep step-by-step renovation of individual buildings (iBRoad-Plan), combined with a repository of building-related information (logbook, iBRoad-Log).
