Who Are We??

Most often many members have no idea who other clubs or members are. The Fort Bend County 4-H program will be starting a meet and greet of all the clubs in the county so members can learn a little more about their fellow 4-H members and clubs, and see the amazing things these clubs are doing across the county. A club or two will be featured in every newsletter and posted to social media and the website. Be on the lookout for your club!

Coming Back from COVID

Owen Kaminski, Council Reporter

The fact that COVID 19 turned all our lives up-side-down is old news. The impact the pandemic had and continues to have on the 4-H program and its members cannot be reversed. Now, we have to move forward and “Make the Best Better”!

As a 4-H member, COVID affected every part of my projects. First, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo being cancelled then the Needville Youth Fair. My livestock swine and poultry projects and all of the time, work and energy that I put into them seemed to be for nothing because no show ring time. I wasn’t the only one though and luckily, I have many more years unlike my older friends that were seniors. With the bad, there is good and thankfully, through the support of generous donors, both shows helped exhibitors with pledge drives and financial support.

The 4-H program on the local, county and state level has incurred setbacks as well. Even though there is the “Zoom” option for meetings, attendance has suffered, contests cancelled and participation seems to be very low. No Round-up, what a disappointment!! Again, with the bad, there is good. Our Agents and Leaders are doing everything that they can within the guidelines to keep things going but we must do our part.

My Memaw always talked about “there is a light at the end of the tunnel”. This pandemic will end and as 4-H members, we must now help the program move forward, encourage and rebuild our participation and “Make the Best Better”!

WHY KEEP RECORDS?

Record keeping is a vital life skill taught through 4-H, and the 4-H Record Book is an organized presentation of what you have learned and accomplished in 4-H by documenting knowledge, attitudes and skills that have been learned. They help 4-H members develop goals and then see if those goals were met at the end of the year. It also helps record your history with 4-H, such as your leadership, community service projects, and workshops you participated in or taught. They also relate the experiences in leadership, citizenship and community service that have been shared. Record keeping can be fun, because it is something that you create! It can be a calendar on the wall, a notebook, or your computer. Why keep records? 4-H records help you develop a record book, as well as apply for awards, scholarships and college. The record book is the complete history of a member’s 4-H activities. Winners in each age division advance to district. Senior 4-H members who place first in district advance to the state record book judging.

New Project Recognition Opportunity

The Fort Bend County 4-H program is introducing a new project recognition opportunity with Project Pins starting January 1, 2021 with a deadline of June 7, 2021. Project Pins were created to acknowledge youth who have completed a 4-H project during the 4-H year to show growth in their project area, leadership, and personal development. A 4-H Project has four components: 1) Learning Experiences of 6 or more sequential learning experiences of 20-60 minutes in length totaling 2 hours or more, 2) Community Service, 3)Leadership, 4) Exhibition of Project Work. To receive pins, applicants will be required to submit six project experiences thru the online application located on the Fort Bend County 4-H website under the Awards section which will be reviewed after submission. Applicants may enter for as many pins as they would like depending on how many projects you've accomplished in the 2020-2021 4-H year, but applicants will need to submit a new entry for every project completed. Should you have any submission issues or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the office at (281) 342-3034 or by email at fortbend4h@ag.tamu.edu. The application can be found at the following link: https://agrilife.org/ftbend4h/beyond-the-project/awards/
